Biotechnology department is the newest of the departments in NIT Sikkim. It was established in the year 2015-16. The department currently offers 4 year BTech program with an intake capacity for 30 students, out of which 50% are reserved for the Sikkim students. Admission is done through JoSAA.

     The department aims to produce bright and professionally equipped biotechnologists ready to explore the immense opportunities lying in the field of biotech industry and research as well scopes in interdisciplinary arena. The department has been established also to explore mostly yet unexplored rich flora and fauna of the high Himalayas for their medicinal purposes beneficial to mankind. Therefore, the department strongly encourages interdisciplinary research.

     Though it is the newest department in NIT Sikkim, it is the fastest growing as well. The department has already conducted the curricula development workshop and developed a new syllabus keeping in view the requirement of present and future generation of biotechnologists.

The department has already started taking steps for setting up of laboratories with modern state of the art equipment.
